Serval

Megan Chandler, Georgia, United States

A neighbor asked if she could borrow my traps for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). She worked in a greenhouse for a nursery for succulents. There was a feral cat and her litter of kittens living in a greenhouse. The owner wanted them to be removed or killed.

She used my traps to trap a couple of the kittens. But it was a very hot day and she didn’t have a place to hold the kittens, so that the traps could be reused. So I drove over and picked up a couple of the kittens. They were about 5-6 weeks old. Very feral. We pulled them out of the traps with gloves and wrapped them tightly in towels. The white kitten bit right through my thumbnail. I ended up fostering all the feral kittens on my screened in porch. And the girl took the mama cat in to get spayed and needed vet care, so she kept her. I tamed and socialized the kittens and found good loving homes for 4 of them. The white one was the most feral, so he hadn’t found a home yet. He was really friendly to me, but terrified of other people. I ended up keeping him. He lives indoors now. He’s over a year old and still small at just 3 lbs. and short in length. He has a bent tail.

Serval is a very special kitty!
