Our municipal shelter has taken in 450-500 cats per year for the past several years, refusing “feral” type cats due to workman’s comp rates and the fact that we couldn’t safely adopt them out. Thanks to inspiration fro Alley Cat Allies, The Million Cat Challenge, Monica Frenden – Austin Pets Alive, we started a “Barn Cat” program 12 months ago. Our record shows that we neutered and returned to the field 94 cats that we previously would have turned away. Last year’s 12 month total (for September end, 2017) was 466 cats in, this year’s September end total showed 563 in.
